Self-study course: Introduction to Water Management

Theme: Courses and apps

CABI is now offering a free online course “Introduction of Water Management” that teaches the fundamental principles of promoting the efficient use of water.

Water holds a key role in agricultural productivity as one of the main resources that crops need. The intensification of the pressure on water resources makes efficient water management techniques more crucial than ever.

Understanding the water needs of various crops, optimizing irrigation methods to reduce waste, and employing innovative strategies to capture and conserve rainwater; these are key practices in water management.

So, by refining water management in agriculture, you can enhance crop yields and build a more resilient food system.

Course objectives

In this course, participants will benefit from theoretical information about making the best use of water in both rainfed and irrigated agriculture, while also gaining practical information about plot-scale practices for water retention, capture of rainwater and irrigation efficiency.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Recognize that water is limited, and its use can be optimized in both rainfed and irrigated plots
  • Explain how much water moves through the soil and crops
  • Describe how much water plants require
  • Make changes to soil and plot to promote water retention
  • Diagnose common plant issues related to water management
  • Innovate on context-specific practices based on the principles learned

Course structure

This course is made up of several sections:

  • Welcome
  • Introduction to water management
  • Improving water productivity in rainfed agriculture
  • Irrigation
  • Foundation certification assessment
  • Practitioner certification assessment
  • Additional resources

Course assessment

Once you feel confident enough to have your learning assessed, you can gain Foundation and Practitioner certificates by successfully completing multiple choice-based assessments.

  • The Foundation assessment assesses your ability to recall information from the course.
