CABI BioProtection Portal is celebrating five years

Theme: BioProtection Portal

The CABI BioProtection Portal is marking its fifth ‘birthday’ with nearly 2 million users across 48 countries since it was launched to empower farmers and advisors with sustainable pest management solutions for greater food security.

Recognised as the largest, free global resource for biological pest management, the CABI BioProtection Portal is going from strength to strength with its impact driven by collaboration with a strong public and private sector network.

This includes working with international organisations like the UN-FAO and the Minor Use Foundation, as well as manufacturers like e-nema and Andermatt Canada, to provide reliable information and resources to farmers and advisors.

Identify, source, and apply biological crop protection products

The Portal is a key resource which helps users identify, source, and apply biological crop protection products to combat crop pests which can impact upon livelihoods and the ability to ensure local, regional and national food security.

Since launching in February 2020, the Portal’s growth has been shaped by our Development Consortium, a network of 45 public and private sector organisations from around the globe who are invited to meet twice a year to review our successes and set our priorities. Through financial contributions, these organisations, which are all Members of the Portal, help to ensure the Portal is maintained as a free and high-quality resource for its users. Through joint promotion efforts, they also support the Portal’s vision to drive awareness and adoption of biological solutions in agriculture. Thanks to this successful example of a public-private partnership, the Portal has now expanded to 48 countries and provides information in 15 languages.

“The CABI BioProtection Portal is an excellent tool for understanding the state of regulatory approvals globally for biopesticides. As biopesticides continue to grow in importance in crop protection, this tool is a great resource for growers and regulators alike to access the most up-to-date information about what products are available and where. For the MUF, it is an integral part of determining how we can best serve speciality crop growers around the world”.

Reducing reliance on chemical pesticides

Dr Ulrich Kuhlmann, CABI’s Executive Director, Global Operations, said, “Evolving challenges posed by pests to global agriculture require the development and implementation of sustainable, nature-based plant protection technologies.

“Biological control plays a pivotal role in these efforts by reducing reliance on chemical pesticides in favour of more sustainable agriculture.

“The CABI BioProtection Portal, through collaboration with governments and private sector companies, enables stakeholders to identify registered products and learn more about biocontrol and specific products.”

Helping to shape the future of sustainable agriculture

Together with our members, the CABI BioProtection Portal is helping to shape the future of sustainable agriculture.

The Portal will continue to build its user base through digital and in-person promotion, expand its education resources – including connecting to scientifically sound sources across CABI and its members – and extend its network of partners and sponsors.

It is also planning a space on the site for regulators to share current best practice, supporting global regulatory harmonisation on bioprotection and biopesticides.
