We are excited to announce the launch of the CABI BioProtection Portal in Portugal to our readers.
The CABI BioProtection portal is an innovative online resource for biological pest control products. Growers and crop management advisors can use the portal to help them identify, source and correctly apply biopesticides in Portugal for their specific crop and pest problems.
The launch comes as part of CABI’s ongoing efforts to expand the reach of the portal globally. Throughout 2021, visitors witnessed the steady growth of this free resource’s content. The coverage expanded to different countries and included various environmentally-friendly control options. This latest country launch helps growers address pests and diseases of major Portuguese crops.
Some of the major crops grown in Portugal include cereals such barley, maize, rice and wheat. Vegetable crops include grapes, potatoes, olives and tomatoes. Moreover, Portugal is famous for its wine and is also one of the world’s biggest exporters of tomato paste, making pest control all the more important.
Biopesticides in Portugal get a boost
CABI created the Bioprotection Portal to provide information about biopesticides and to aid in the sustainable fight against crop pests and diseases. It aims to be the go-to resource for identifying and sourcing biocontrol and biopesticide products.
The portal is easy to use. Simply enter your country and crop-pest query in the system to gain information on specific biocontrol and biopesticide products authorized by national regulators for that specific search. We source information directly from the national governments’ list of registered pesticides and from partner biocontrol manufacturers.
Helping farmers worldwide to reduce their reliance on chemical pesticides, the CABI BioProtection Portal is a truly international resource. Aside from Portugal, other countries where the portal has been launched include Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Morocco, Peru, Spain and Uganda.
Dr Ulrich Kuhlmann, Executive Director, Global Operations at CABI, said, “An estimated 40 percent of crops are lost to pests and diseases worldwide, so growers are looking for ways to fight unwanted insect pests and diseases with more sustainable and safer biocontrol and biopesticide products. The CABI BioProtection Portal can become a part of their integrated pest management strategy offering a ‘one-stop shop’ for information.
“Today, consumers are more discerning about the produce they buy. Certain kinds of chemical pesticides in agriculture create human health and environmental effects that they want to avoid. Growers aim to replace chemical pesticides with biological or natural products. This shift addresses market standards, consumer demands, and environmental concerns. We believe the portal can be a beneficial part of their strategies to achieve this. We’re excited to have launched the portal in Portugal.”
